This unit of the past tenses reflected the unit on the present tenses in both usage and formation, aside from the obvious difference of past and present. The four past tenses include past simple, past continuous, past perfect, and past perfect continuous. The most simple is the affirmative of the past simple, add -ed or -d to the base form. In the negative and question form, use the past tense of 'do', did. Of course, there are exceptions, which are important to have students familiarize or memorize. I think it is important to note and remember that even though the irregular verbs sound normal and correct to me, students learning English will not know, for example, catch is caught rather than attempting to add 'ed' to catch. The usages and formations of the other three past tenses follow the same patterns of the present. The past continuous uses was/were and the verb with -ing ending. The past perfect uses had and the past participle. Lastly, the past perfect continuous uses had been and the verb with -ing ending. Again, it is important to be aware of common student mistakes, particularly the omission of needed auxiliary verbs or -ing endings.
