This unit focused on typical issues that a teacher might come across. The first day presents many challenges as the teacher needs to not only establish rapport with the students but also assess where the students are in their English learning. If it is a new group, the teacher must also establish rapport between the students. Larger classes also present challenges as it might not be practical for the teacher to give each student individual attention, but each student still needs ample time to participate. Partner and group work are very helpful. Sometimes students need to be reminded to use English rather than their first language, the teacher can do this by only responding to students when they use English. Shy students can feel intimidated speaking in front of classes, using partner work and allowing them to record themselves outside of the classroom can decrease anxiety during class time.
