This unit focused on the two productive skills of language, speaking and writing. Both are equally important to each other and the two receptive skills. The unit describes that both skills are modes of communication and are used because the speaker/writer has a purpose want to say something, listen to something or are interested in something being said. The unit starts with speech and describes teaching for accuracy versus fluency and details how controlled and guided activities benefit accuracy whereas creative activities favor the development of fluency. Later the unit describes the special difficulties with writing such as punctuation, penmanship and creative writing and gives ESA models for teaching both productive skills.
