Pronunciation is often overlooked by teachers, but students often struggle with it. While modeling through immersion does help, it can be helpful to specifically focus on pronunciation to some extent, whether in the form of a whole lesson, small lessons integrated into larger ones, or on a need basis. A teacher should understand the International Phonetic Alphabet to help guide students through dictionary entries or use them as a tool if they see fit. The discrepancies between English spelling and pronunciation can be confusing, but through exposure and association of the word’s pronunciation with its representative spelling students can learn. Overall intonation of sentences should also be considered. Over representation of these forms can help as well as discerning uses and meanings.
