This unit provides general tips and sample ESA lessons on how to teach new vocabulary, grammar, and functions. The order in which to teach vocabulary is not set. Grammar typically follows a pattern, for example, starting with present simple tense and proceeding with difficulty. However, vocabulary does not progress neatly or orderly. Thus, I thought the section on selecting vocabulary was very important. The tips included selecting relevant vocabulary taking into considerations appropriateness, teachability, frequency, and coverage. The breakdown and examples of engage, study, and activate for vocabulary provided very practical knowledge for future lesson planning. I also agree with the unit in that the straight arrow method suits vocabulary lessons well, as teaching and learning vocabulary is rather straightforward unlike grammar lessons which require more practice and understanding. Like grammar, teaching functions in English lends itself to more complex ESA plans, patchwork or boomerang, and role-plays are helpful for the activate sections in order to practice usage.
