In an ESA (Engage-Study-Activate) lesson, the first stage is to engage students by having them do activities which motivate the learning of the content of the lesson, the English grammar and/or vocabulary necessary or useful to accomplish the linguistic tasks of the activities of the Engagement phase. The second stage involves studying the structures and/or lexical items that the students know they need to acquire and master in order to be able to perform the communicative tasks they worked on in the previous phase. In the Activate stage, students use the grammar and/or vocabulary they were motivated to learn, and studied, in creative ways in new activities to accomplish different and more general tasks.
