Because I have taken a course in linguistics focusing on the linguistics of English, much of this unit was review for me. However, it was a good reminder that there is a lot of nuisance and irregularity in English. As a native speaker, the pages of verb conjugations come very naturally, but that is highly intimidating to someone who is not a native speaker. It is important to remember that learners are just that, people learning a language that is vast not only in vocabulary, but also in grammar. In order to be a good teacher, one must not only model proper use, but have enough command of their subject (English in this case) and knowledge to anticipate learners’ confusion and questions and have reasonable answers and explanations in response.
