In this unit we reviewed more grammatical rules that students may have problems with. The grammar that we have gone over is by no means exhaustive, but this has been a good summary of what students might need extra help with. Modals can change the intended meaning of a phrase or sentence, and can convey obligation, necessity, certainty, ability,permission, advice, etc. Phrasal verbs are, simply put, verb phrases that consist of two or more verbs. Often, the combination of the two plus verbs changes the meaning of the words. For example, the phrase "turn up" doesn't usually mean to turn upwards. Rather, it means to arrive or appear. Finally, passive voice versus active voice changes the focus of the sentence by directing it to the object or action rather than the person.
