In unit 12 we focused on teaching the two productive skills - speaking and writing. When we teach speaking skills, we should focus on both accuracy (during the study phase) and fluency (during the activate phase) because they are both equally important. There are three types of activities we can use in the classroom when teaching speaking skills – controlled activities (such as drilling and prompting), guided activities (model dialogues, guided role play) and creative communication activities (such as discussions, debates, information gap). There might be many reasons why students won’t speak in the classroom, therefore it is really important that the teacher encourages the students through group or pair-work, give purpose to the activities and let the students have their time to prepare what they will say so they can feel more confident. When teaching writing skills, the teacher should pay attention to handwriting, spelling and layout and the punctuation of the text.
