Types of classes can vary depending on where and for whole the classes are taking place. Teaching complete and false beginners needn't be intimidating, the teacher simply needs to bring a new skills set into play. For instance, emphasis should be on the visual and demonstrative ways of getting students to understand what is required of them to participate in activities and the teacher needs to slow down giving good clear simple instructions. The teacher needs to be aware that the lessons cannot be rushed and be willing to repeat their instructions. Individual students are great to teach as they will be highly motivated so once the level, wants and needs are identified the teacher can tailor everything to their needs. Another advantage of this type of lesson is that the student can progress quickly. The teacher needs to be aware of this and have prepare lots of activities and employ lots of techniques as the work covered moves swiftly on. Many teachers welcome the challenge of teaching children and often say that this is the most rewarding form of teaching. The children are bright, curious, receptive and are less concerned with making mistakes than adult learners. The teacher needs to be aware that children tire easily so the activities need to be varied and fun. Paper, pencils, children art on the walls and reward smiley stickers are good to keep at hand but to ensure a good lesson it is the teachers attitude that will really make the difference to the classroom dynamics and will curb discipline issues. The responsibilities are greater for the teacher of children and it is up to the teacher to ensure that they are fair, consistent, issue no threats, never raise their voice unless absolutely necessary for the safety of the children in their care and fully adhere to the codes of conduct issued by the school. The demands are great but the rewards are many. Teachers of Business English need to be aware of the specific needs of their learners and accept that there might be a completely different dynamic to teaching in the school classroom. For instance students often are learning English on top their daily work load and family commitments and could be coming to the lesson - which is probably in the evening - tired and they might also struggle to find time to complete homework. Even if the class is held during the day on company time there is the possibility that some learners/business people might be called out of class to attend to a business matter. There is the possibility that the group could be very diversified in their learning levels and in the level within the company so sensitivity is required during group activities etc. It is best for the teacher to get the learners on board from the start, to be aware of individual needs and include a needs negotiation session during the first teaching lesson to agree the class needs. These can always be reviewed later. The teacher is the teacher of English and they wish to be respected as such as the teacher will respect the skills and abilities of the business people. The classroom activities can be geared towards there requirements by using relevant materials such as faxes and letters with the company logo and speaking in English on the telephone, giving a presentation etc. Teaching adult business student could also prove to be a worthwhile and rewarding teaching experience.
