Unit 5 covered a wide variety of teaching themes for the business English classroom. First it covered case studies, which are good for working on language skills and opportunities. Case studies work best when experience has been established with them, so it is best to build up to tasks, pre-teach difficult language, set up the activity mechanics, and demonstrate it before giving students the framework to do the activity on their own. Next, the unit covered basic frameworking: input, process, output. This theme is good when there is a desire to teach a change of language from past to future (or past to current). Problem-based learning is covered next, explaining the importance of group work and role assignments. Problem-based learning focuses more on students working amongst themselves to identify problems in the task or activity, and then solve the problems they find. Since communication is key in this learning theme, identifying “too many” problems is not actually a problem. As with young learners, this unit covered how games are able to be adapted to suit business English language learners. However, business learners have a great benefit in that they have access to computer aided language learning (CALL). Since they can use the internet, possibilities increase for research, readings, online models/games, and more. The material availability is only limited by the confines of the internet itself! The unit then covered the Speech Act Theory, which claims that language is used to perform actions or do something. There are five acts in this theory, and each shows a variation of motion of speech through illocutionary, locutionary, and perlocutionary speech (the desire, the utterance, the effect). This unit then concluded with three sample lesson plans, each of which used a combination of the different teaching themes to show how to properly use them in a functioning lesson plan.
