This unit provides an overview on troubleshooting common problem situations in the classroom. It begins with building rapport on the very first day of class so as to prevent such problems. Using 'warmers' or warmup activities rather than diving into a lesson deepens student interest and attention. One issue in the classroom involves a widening gap of students of differing language levels, as some students struggle while others are bored. One suggested solution that I really liked involved pairing a strong language student with a weaker one. This allows the stronger student to clarify tasks or content, and sometimes it is helpful to hear clarifications from a peer. Other problem areas involved troubleshooting reluctant students, students struggling with listening activities, and students attempting to use their native language in the classroom. Keeping activities interesting and at the appropriate level of language based on the class will aid in these problem areas.
