There are a variety of materials that can be used by a teacher. From this unit, I learned the importance of using a variety of materials. Authentic and non-authentic material both have advantages and disadvantages. Authentic materials will be relevant and will possibly be more interesting, but it is important to exercise care when choosing the material, so it fits the level of the students and contributes to the lesson being taught. Non-authentic materials can be specifically geared to the language level and the lesson. Course books can be useful because they have a tried and tested syllabus, but it is important to choose one carefully and be balanced in its use. A teacher would not want to be too tied to the course book. There may be opportunities to replace certain parts with more relevant material or at times even omit parts that are not applicable. Overall, balance and making careful choices is important in the use of any materials in the classroom.
