This chapter dealt with the modals, phrasal verbs and passive voice section and was the last grammar section of this course. It was very difficult to understand the subtle differences in meanings versus can and could. In different parts of the USA we use them interchangeably and although it is useful to understand the varying degrees of politeness it not something I think should be overly focused on in the ESL classroom unless the class is focused on international relations or business English. The beautiful thing about languages is that situations in usage are evolving and can be argued in certain directions depending on the context. As a native speaker of English it was easy to hear the difference in nuance when reading the example sentences aloud. I found the last part of the chapter very challenging when dealing with relative clauses as there were very limited example sentences and a missing diagram highlighting the parts of speech needed to be made in order to help understand the material.
