Conditional grammar rules can be very complicated as there are many forms a sentence can take when dealing with metaphorical questions. There are 'Zero Conditionals' where the facts are irrefutable, and 'First conditionals' that deal with possible futures and onward to 'Second and Third Conditionals' that deal with hypothetical and conditions that have not be met or 'unreal' situations.
This leads to many complications as you introduce reported speech as you tell others what you have heard from a certain individual. Direct speech will convert Present Simple tenses into Past Simple, Present continuous tense into Past Continuous, and so forth.
