The main takeaway of this unit on theories, methods, and techniques revolves around the introduction of the ESA method, engage, study, activate. First, engage the students such as through an interactive warm-up activity. Then, study the intended material--elicit student knowledge, present the material, and drill through exercises. Finally, activate--have students utilize their language skills such as through role-play activities. A straight arrow ESA lesson plan follows these three steps exactly. However, boomerang ESA lessons or patchwork ESA lessons allow for more freedom and flexibility while maintaining the general principles of ESA. I think these two lesson formats are very useful, as they allow for gaging student knowledge and mistakes prior to the lesson and focuses the material needed to be covered. Additionally, this unit discussed feedback as necessary for improvement. My main takeaways from this section were be positive and provide opportunity for self-reflection prior to teacher correction.
