This final grammar unit covers modal auxiliary verbs, the passive voice, relative clauses, and phrasal verbs. Modal verbs are used before other verbs to indicate permission, obligation, ability or even advice. These modal verbs vary in the degree of formality, politeness, and degree of certainty. For example, using 'may' is more polite than 'can' when asking permission. In my experience, I have always been taught to steer away from using the passive voice in formal writing. This unit taught me the actual benefits and usages of the passive voice in addition to more clear formation. Clauses can be independent, dependent, or relative. Relative clauses utilize relative pronouns such as who, that, or which. Lastly, phrasal verbs are multiword verbs, and there are three types - intransitive, transitive separable, and transitive inseparable.
