One of the many subtleties of the English language is the implied emphasis within a given sentence that is brought to light on account of the aspect of the verb. In this case, active and passive forms of verbs very much highlight this dynamic. On a very fundamental level, we see that while the active verb centers on the subject (and its identity) of the action being carried out -- whereas the passive verb form emphasizes the receptive object. We also see the distinction in verbs which imply a direct object (transitive) and those that do not (intransitive). Like German (it's cousin language...), English is a highly synthetic language that makes use of prepositional and adverbial particles to further specify the habit/mode/location/ and direction of the verbal action. Though such specificity can be daunting to the English language learner, it is an essential part of English expression.
