When we teach/learn a language we should pay attention to all four skills – listening, speaking, writing and reading. Unit 11 paid close attention to listening and reading – so-called receptive skills. We saw that there are two reasons for reading and listening and they are listening/reading for a purpose or for entertainment. In order our students to understand properly the meaning of what they read or listen we need to teach them specialist skills such as predicting, scanning (choosing only specific information we need), skimming, understanding every detail and reading between the lines. When we teach receptive skills we also need to be careful to prepare a variety of topics that would be interesting for the students using both authentic and non-authentic texts.
