Unit 15 describes the need and the different kinds of examination and tests. There are 5 kinds of tests – placement tests, progress tests, diagnostic tests, practice tests and external examinations. The purpose of the placement tests is to show the level of a new student so the teacher can place them in the correct class according to their level. Diagnostic tests are very similar to the placement tests and are also giving at the beginning of the course but their purpose is to show the teacher what kind of difficulties the students have so he/she can prepare his/her lessons and materials focusing on these difficulties. Progress test can be given at any time throughout the learning period and their purpose is to show both teacher and students, what is the students’ progress. Practice tests are usually conducted to prepare the students for an external test such as TOEFL, FCE, ESOL, TOEIC, etc., and are made to follow the format and the structure of the external test the students are going to take.
