There are multiple measures of students language levels such as tests, tutorials, and student evaluations. Teachers often use short periodic progress tests to gather information on how the students are doing and what they are retaining. This doesn't have to be a sit down written/multiple choice exam but can also be in the form of a game or a group activity. There are different tests for different purposes. For example, placement/diagnostic tests give teachers information on the students language level and can be used prior to entering the class. However, progress tests can be used during the course to see how effective the teaching/learning has been. There are also practice tests to help prepare for other exams.
