A good teacher is one who is kind and patient, has a good understanding of the material, can build rapport with students, and has a good understanding of his or her students' strengths and weaknesses. The teacher will have many different roles in the classroom such as facilitator, manager, model, and assessor. Of all the roles of a teacher that were taught in this unit, I feel that the role of facilitator is especially important. Students need a facilitator to provide structure and meaningful activities to the lessons. Students will vary in their ages, language skills, and motivations. Age is usually split into four main groups - under 7, 8-12, 13-18, and adults. There are many differences between teaching younger students versus adults. Younger students tend to have shorter attention spans and less experience, but are usually not afraid to experiment and make mistakes. They are less likely to compare their L1 with English, and more likely to learn English from context. An adult usually has a much larger attention span and much more experience. Because of this, they often have preconceived notions about how their learning experience will go. They are often self-motivated by job opportunities, travel reasons, or a love of languages. They are less comfortable taking risks or making mistakes, and more likely to compare their L1 with English. A good student will be willing to ask questions, experiment with the language, and participate. A good teacher, through his or her ability to motivate and properly teach the class, will often times have good students.
