This unit made the astute observation that English learners are not homogenous, even beginners to English fall into different categories that vary in age, prior exposure to English, and motivation to learn. The unit gave specific tips for teaching specific categories of English learners, from beginners, individual learners, children, to people learning business English or English for Specific Purposes for their profession. What I found the most helpful and applicable across learners is how to conduct a needs analysis, because I think it helps a teacher establish from day one that they are there to serve their students' best interests and are open to communication about how the class can help the students address their weaknesses in the language and achieve their personal goals.
