This unit brought up some key points for me in regards to teaching. Writing, in particular, is an area I worry about for students who are first venturing into the English language. Speaking comes with its own struggles, but many (especially those in tonal languages) can find ways to take in English properly. However, the writing aspect of English tests a lot of memorization. Compounding the memorization of basic words is the construct and punctuation rules. Many of these "rules" tend to have caveats and sudden shifts with seemingly no real reasoning behind it. Because of this, writing seems to be most conducive to creating fun and engaging game dynamics. This, I believe, helps remove the monotony and the overwhelmed feeling students may get from the sheer number of deviations from rules when writing. On the other side of the coin, speaking can come with its own set of challenges. Due to it's nature, opportunity to pause and consider before speaking (as one does when writing) is removed. For students who have anxiety or are generally nervous, this can be difficult. Here, I believe repetition in study is key for confidence. Both productivity skills are truly key in the modern age. Considering the many ways to engage students with varied skill-building exercises (as well as remembering the intended goal of each skill) comes to the forefront of my mind when reading a Unit like this one.
