Learning about the various methods of TEFL/TESOL teaching has helped me understand how English has been taught in the past and how contemporary teachers believe an active and thorough lesson should be taught today. The ESA method helps me think about how a lesson can be made with a specific language objective ("Students will be able to do X") and structured so that students can first be engaged, then taught about a language point in context, and then practice that language point with anything from games to role-plays to picture presentations, depending on level. The Boomerang and Patchwork ESA structures also seem useful for planning a lesson that can keep all 3 fundamental phases while addressing any language errors that may arise during activities.
