This unit talks about the various roles of a teacher. The teacher is a manager, a facilitator, an assessor, a prompter and a person who models correct language patterns. A good teacher is consistent, prompt, a great role model and is patient and kind. A good teacher knows his or her subject matter very well and takes great pleasure in transmitting his or her knowledge to others. An excellent teacher will also understand his or her students' motivations for learning English and interests and tailor their learning to fit their needs. Age and culture are other factors that will decide which kinds of teaching methods or activities that you will use to give your students the best possible learning experience This unit also talks about various age groups of students you might be teaching. These days it is becoming more and more common to see preschool age or younger children taking ESL courses. This age lacks attention span, but can be engaged in learning when it involves physical movement, song, and dance. They love games and colorful pictures. Their brains are quick to absorb new information. Language acquisition at this phase is also at its strongest. After the age of 7, people become less and less able to learn English through simple immersion. Elementary age students also love the use of games and physical activity in their lessons but are also able to sit down and engage in paper based activities. Reward systems work great with this age group to help motivate them. Adults are likely to be more self-motivated than kids because they will have a plethora of reasons to learn. Some of these include needing English for work, desiring English ability to make international friends, or simply engaging in English learning as a hobby. You will come across a range of skill levels. Some learners will be beginners with zero to basic English ability. Others will be advanced learners able to discuss a wide range of topics in great depth and are refining their knowledge of the more subtle structures of English such as idioms and metaphors and more. Most students will fall somewhere in the middle of these two extremes.
