This unit focuses on five different groups of English learners: Beginners, Individuals, Young Learners, Business English, and Monolingual vs. Multilingual. Each section discusses how teachers of English should organize, plan, and conduct their classrooms and their lessons based on the specific needs/requirements for each learner group. I have learned that for beginners it is important to keep lessons simple and to be more visual rather than verbal. I have learned that for teaching individuals it can be harder to keep lessons interesting and should try and remedy this by keeping in mind the interests of the individual. For young learners I have learned that it's important to use slow and simple speech, keep activities fun and short, and to constantly repeat myself. I also learned what not to do for young learners like putting individuals on the spot or being inconsistent. For business English I learned that it is not necessary for me as the teacher to have extensive knowledge of business in order to be successful. I also learned the importance of a needs analysis for business English learners before starting the course in order to best fit their individual and group needs. Finally I learned that there can be advantages and disadvantages to teaching either a monolingual or multilingual English class. For example, some advantages of teaching a monolingual class would be that the students would have similar difficulties in learning the language, and they can help each other in their native language. This, however, can be a disadvantage for multilingual classrooms because they will not have shared difficulties in learning English and will not be able to help each other in their native language. Overall I think it is important to take away from this unit the importance of recognizing the group of learners I will be teaching and taking the necessary actions to ensure the success of my students.
