This unit focused on teaching the receptive skills which are reading and listening. I learned that in regards to reading, even for native speakers there are certain skills we go through when we read material, depending on what it is- for example the differences between scanning and skimming, or listening for detailed information versus prediction based on headlines. I also learned that an important thing to keep in mind when creating a lesson is to try and pique the students interest using a variety of topics, especially so that all students can be catered to eventually over time. In addition, I also learned that it is important to be mindful when choosing the appropriate text for students and the difference between authentic text (not designed for learners) versus non-authentic text (designed for learners). I learned that it's vital to ensure that should students have to read an authentic text, it should be on a subject or topic they already know.
