The gist of this unit seems to suggest that a teacher should be at least open to the possibility of finding a balance between using course books designed for that area of study as well as a variety of authentic materials and created materials. With a wider range of available materials, the advantage would be the greater opportunity to reach a wider range of student interests and abilities. It would also provide the teacher with greater protection from becoming complacent, bored, or burned out from using the same materials repeatedly.
