There is a wide range of opinion regarding the use of course books for ESL teaching. Although there are obvious advantages of using course books, such as a tested syllabus and a progression of topics and skills; there are also disadvantages, namely that the use of course books could allow a teacher to become lazy and uncreative. By incorporating authentic and created materials along with course books, lesson plans can better engage students and address the specific needs of a particular class.
