In this unit on evaluation and testing, I have learned of the several different types of test offered to students who want to learn English as a Foreign Language. I learned that each test's goals are different depending on which ones are to be given to students- for example, Placement Tests are used to gauge the student's language ability before placing them in the appropriate class, versus a Diagnostic Test which is usually given at the start at the course to see what the students already know. I also learned that there are a number of ways to evaluate students which don't have to be conducted through only testing. This also includes: evaluating students through tutorials, and the student's own self evaluation throughout the course. In addition to these points, I have also learned of several external tests which can offer students English certification, such as Cambridge Exams covering general English and Business English, and ESOL, a functional test for students wishing to improve their English in a daily and functional setting.
