This last unit discusses most common problem situations in the classroom and provides ways of dealing with them.
When teaching students for the first time it is a priority to establish rapport between the teacher and the class. As part of the 1st lesson the teacher must also try to find out the English level of everyone in the class. The teacher may ask the students to interview each other using a set of questionnaire, including but not limited to, a needs analysis questionnaire and the results will then be fed back to the class.
As a warmer the use of memory games is a good one enabling every student to talk one after each other in English about a previous experience.
The teacher should encourage the use of English where appropriate and the use of native language is not usually allowed. In order to minimize such instances, the teacher must ensure that the activities are at the appropriate level that the students can cope with.
Reluctant students might have confidence issues and to help them overcome their lack of confidence, the teacher must use plenty of pair work and in other instances use role-play that make them comfortable when they are acting as somebody else other then themselves.
Lastly, the teacher may pre-teach difficult vocabulary to help students improve their listening skills.
