This unit provided an overview and brief summary of different language teaching methodologies -- which I found fascinating and learned a lot from since I was unaware of many of these methods, especially “the silent way” or “suggestoepaedia.” I was surprised that many of these methods are already being used in my classroom or was used for me during my language classes -- without knowing it, I had already employed ESA, the lexical approach, and task based learning in my lesson plans. It was helpful learning about the specific terms for these methods and the teaching theory behind them. I especially found learning about ESA very helpful. Most of my lessons include some aspects of engage, study, and activate, but seeing it detailed in theory helps me organize and focus my activities better. I found the ideas for each ESA stage most helpful, especially for the Activate stage. Lastly, the section on corrections served a good reminder of the extent, frequency and content of effective corrections, and I will definitely apply these in class.
