This unit covered guidelines on how to teach the productive skills of writing and speaking. Most of the content was straightforward and common, as it covered many creative speaking activities that are commonly found in many EFL classrooms. However, I did learn a lot about how to teach writing in interactive ways, especially when I read the ESA example lesson plan on a writing activity lesson. It was especially helpful to learn about when and in what situations handwriting, spelling and punctuation are important—depending on the activity and the learning objective goal. It is difficult to teach writing in an engaging way since it is often a very singular, individual activity. However, I learned in this unit that there are ways to Engage and Activate the students even when teaching writing, such as working with comic strips or creating stories. It was also especially helpful to learn about the distinction between accuracy and fluency, and when each of these are important.
