Conditionals are complicated, and even though native English speakers naturally choose the correct way to say them, it won't be the same for learners. Although there are rules as to how to form them, there are exceptions (as there always seems to be in English), and understanding conditionals is all based on the student's understanding of the tenses. Combined with how to report speech, teaching these concepts is tricky and multifaceted. Probably the best thing to do when teaching this is to do many games that demonstrate how conditionals change depending on intent, and to take it very slowly so as to not overwhelm the students.
