I learned about Modal auxiliary verbs, which are verbs used with the main verb to express ability, possibility, necessity, suggestions, permission and so on. I learned how it changes the meaning of a sentence to express these functions. Modal Verbs have a lot of uses. Some modal verbs have the same meaning, but I learned how they differ according to the degree of formality, strength, or certainty. This lesson was certainly a good review to me so in the future, I could plan my lesson carefully. It is best to introduce it to students, one at a time, as according to its purpose, degree of formality and certainty. Role plays about asking and giving advice, asking permission or suggestions, doing interviews stating abilities, and storytelling, are fun and engaging activities we could do in the classroom. I learned the differences of the Active and Passive voice of the English sentence. Active voice focuses on the agent or doer of the action, whilst the Passive voice focuses on the subject. Passive Voice is used when we don’t want to say the performer of the action, or when the agent is not known or not important. If a speaker or writer wants to state the noun doing the action in a passive form, they must add “by” phrase after the passive verb. Teaching the Passive voice is confusing to most students, so we must make sure they are familiarized with the Active form first, before giving them step by step lesson points about Passive voice. It is important to ask them general knowledge using passive forms or give them comprehension test as much as possible. I learned about Relative clause which is a dependent clause that modifies a noun, also known as adjective clause. It describes, identifies, or gives further details about a noun. It is introduced by a relative pronoun such as who, which, that, whose, whom, and so on, or may not have a relative pronoun. I learned it has 2 types, which are defining and non-defining. Defining relative clause makes it clear who the person or thing we are talking about. The information given is important to the meaning of the sentence. On the other hand, I learned that the information given in the non-defining clause is not important to the meaning of the sentence. Commas are used in non-defining clause. Relative Clause has a complex grammatical structure, but it is important for students to learn it because even if they don’t understand the vocabulary, using relative clause is a good way to be understood or comprehend someone`s explanation. I also learned about Phrasal verbs, which are verbs consisting of a main verb and a preposition, adverb, or both. It functions as one item. Phrasal verbs can be Intransitive if it has no direct object, or Transitive if it has an object. Transitive can be separable if the object is pronoun, so then the object only come in between the verb and the participle. Transitive can be inseparable if the verb and adverb or preposition can not be separated, and the object come after the particle. Learning Phrasal verbs are difficult for students, as well as for me. Changing the prepositions could change the meaning of the verb and thus creates confusion. I learned that it is best learned as vocabulary items. Teaching approaches includes making a list of phrasal verbs for a particular subject or topic. Phrasal verbs are really interesting and is usually used a lot by native speakers. There are a lot of phrasal verbs and I want study and familiarized myself with the most commonly used phrasal verbs, so I could teach it properly in the future.
