As with the previous unit on the present form, I was aware of the past tenses covered in this unit as an English speaker would, and some grammar points I have covered in previous English classes. However, I learned a lot from reading about the specific grammatical terms used for each past tense and how each usage varies. It was helpful learning about the different usages and formulas, as this would make it easier to explain grammatical concepts relating to past verb tenses. I also learned many common student errors, such as failing to add “had” or “been” to past perfect continuous verb tenses—which will assist in keeping an eye out in student essays. Finally, I was also aware of the affirmative and negative forms of past tenses, but I was not aware of the Question form, so learning the formation of Question for each past tense was help to learn about, since it is yet again another common mistake English learners have.
