As the name implies, this first unit has given me a proper introduction to teacher-student relationships. The content was much appreciated as it has helped me to understand the various, hidden complexities involved when conducting lessons. I found the multi-faceted role of the teacher to be quite interesting due to the sometimes subtle differences of the roles that the teacher may take on (for example, the subtleties between managing and organising classes). This, along with my improved understanding of the different types of learners based on age, culture, and language skills has given me a better understanding of the need for flexibility and adaptation based on such factors. An example of such adaptation would be in preschool-aged learners where, due to their short attention span, a greater organisation of activities would be preferred and the managerial role would be confined to correcting students behaviour. I also found the area concerning different age groups to be quite important. The main reason for this is that certain groups of students may exhibit particular strengths and weaknesses. Teenage learners, for example, show less restraint towards peer pressure and greater self-consciousness when learning. An important goal as a teacher would be to take an appropriate approach to such issues with the goal of building greater confidence and motivation through tackling such weaknesses and building on their strengths. Overall, I have come out of this unit with an important and fundamental understanding of how to get the best results for students, through adapting and tailoring the learning experience to their needs.
