Unit nine of the ITTT TEFL Course covers the lesson planning phase of teaching English as a foreign language. Lesson planning aids both the teacher as well as the students. It is important to incorporate flexibility into a lesson plan because a rigid plan will disservice both the teacher and students by making it too difficult to react and respond to changing circumstances in the classroom. The plans will aid in planning, give teachers a working document from which to call upon in class and give the teacher a record of the lesson for reference in the future.
There are many characteristics of a good lesson plan. They should include learner and teacher objectives,the language point being taught, teaching aids used, anticipated problems (and solutions), procedure, phase, timing, interaction, class level, student count, date/time and teacher/observer names.
