This unit focuses on the teaching of the two productive skills: speaking and writing. The main purpose of these skills is for communication. Next, accuracy and fluency are discussed. Accuracy concentrates on correct language use (Study phase) and fluency focuses on creativity (Activate phase). Encouraging students to engage the material is always a concern and happens for a myriad reasons. Generally, pair and group work mixed with fluency activities can help reluctant students. Writing tends to be the forgotten skill, as it is requires precious, precious class time. Writing is different from speaking in that factors such as handwriting, spelling, layout, and punctuation need to be considered. Creative writing can help students practice appropriate language and story telling techniques. Finally, there are games. Games are not simply time wasters, but integral to a sound lesson plan, as they generate student interest and allow students a chance at controlled practice in new, interesting ways.
