Rockport, Texas TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
In unit ten we were shown two videos of the same lesson being taught twice. In the first video the teacher had a poor attitude and did not explain concepts or instructions clearly. This resulted in a lot of student confusion and intimidation. During the engage phase he was quick to shoot down student mistakes and errors which lead to little participation from the class. In contrast, in the second video the teacher held a more positive attitude and encouraged as much participation as possible from the entire class and waited until the study phase to correct errors. During the study phase of the first video he gave each student an individual worksheet and removed himself from being an available resource. This did not allow the students to practice their English with each other and they felt uncomfortable asking for assistance when they did not understand. Again in contrast, in the second video the teacher gave clearer instructions, elicited a practice example from the entire class as a whole, put the students in pairs to encourage student talk time, and remained as a resource to help students who may have been struggling. During the activate stage of the first video the teacher jumps into a game with no clear rules and students are left confused the entire time. Not a lot gets accomplished from this. In the second video the teacher gives many examples before jumping into the game and allows for the students to explore and practice with each other. At the end of the game he goes over a lot of the results to further enhance the lesson.
