This unit demonstrates the types of evaluation modes and tests available for teachers and schools to assess students’ respective language learning progress and level. There are generally three types of forms, including tutorials, evaluation by the students, and tests. The most extensive use method is the implementation of tests. From this chapter, I have become more well-verse in understanding the underlying rationales when we are considering numerous tests. Firstly, it is placement test, which is conducted at the beginning of the course to testify how much the students know and don’t know. Hence, school can assign them to a class which suits their language level, and that teachers can also base on students’ results and plan their lesson materials. As the learning process goes along the way, secondly, I understood that progress tests should be conducted periodically so that teachers can measure what language has been remembered or acquired and what language has been forgotten by the students. The results will be extremely helpful to let both parties know what language items will need to draw more review and learning effort. Progress tests should also comprehensively entail all four skills too (reading, writing, speaking and listening), and none of them should be left out. Lastly, I also gained deeper understanding towards types of external examination which are getting more popular nowadays, e.g. Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC). In particular, practice tests should comply with the format and the structure of the external examination. For the external examination, I also knew more about the components of Cambridge Assessment. They can divided into five categories, namely, Key English Test (KET – elementary level), Preliminary English Test (PET – intermediate level), and First Certificate in English (FCE – upper intermediate level), Certificate in Advanced English (CAE – advanced level), and Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE – very advanced level). In my personal view, the above learning is very functional to help my teaching in relation to evaluation and testing. This knowledge will definitely help me to determine and measure the level of appropriateness when implementing different tests for the students when stepping into different learning stages.
