Teachers have the option to use a course book. Some teachers have lots of choice over which book they use, while others do not. No course book is perfect, so teachers must be able to adapt the book to their students' needs, omit sections that aren't useful, and supplement sections that need more attention. A course book can be helpful to new teachers as it provides lessons that are already planned out and can help structure the class. But using a course book sometimes means that teachers are not as creative as they can be, and students may not get exactly the lesson the teacher wanted to provide. Teachers can supplement course books with authentic materials that they find or created materials that they make for class. While created materials can be tailored to the class provide the exact lesson the teacher wants to give, authentic materials can be interesting and give students confidence when they understand them.
