This unit was very interesting as it dealt with the different kinds of classroom magnagment that will naturally occur within a learning setting. I particularly enjoyed the building a rapport section because often I have witnessed other educators who seem to struggle with classes that don’t go ‘according to plan’. It was a good reminder that being a good ESL educator means being flexible and paying attention to the people within the class. The human connection is most important in allowing for students to use and practice their foreign language and the ESL teacher has a very important role in helping students build their skills even with subtle changes such as ‘reading the class’ and knowing which students may be stronger than others and having those personality types group up. This unit also talked about many of the positive and negative points about student seating arrangements and how to deal with certain problems that may arise depending on the the age of the class, the culture of the class, student personality dynamics and other points to be considered when trying to create a harmonious and safe for ESL learning space.
