This unit identifies various types of beginners in English learning setting. They include ‘absolute beginner’, ‘false beginner’, ‘adult beginner’, ‘young beginner’, and ‘beginner without Roman alphabet’, together with their learning needs. The materials also highlight to the teachers concerning the respective teaching methodologies and techniques (e.g. use choral repetition and ask a lot of questions) we need to exercise, as well as the possible problems we need to anticipate (e.g. what if teachers run out of teaching materials in lesson, and how to help the weaker students). I think this sharing has been very useful to me, which also gives me a very good insight as to the mentality and attitude I should have before teaching students with beginner levels. ESP generally includes those clients who require one-one teaching, in-company group, an in-school group. In particular, their ages can vary greatly from 20s to mid 50s, and their English level can be very different too. Teachers may need to vary their teaching materials so as to accommodate their specific learning needs. For this, I learnt that before the lessons begin, it is vital to find out what the students want and what they need. There is often a difference. English teachers need to balance their clients’ wants and needs with those of the companies – by identifying specific objectives. To do so, we need to conduct ‘needs analysis’ so that teachers can identify the students’ strengths, weaknesses and expectations, which will definitely help teachers to prepare their lesson materials accordingly, and make the learning become an effective one.
