In this lesson I learned about how to evaluate and test students. There are several ways to gauge a student's language level, including tutorials, evaluation by the students, and tests. Tutorials can be done as a kind of overview of the week's lessons, any problems encountered, and students' performance. Student evaluations can help the teacher gauge whether their lessons are helping them learn in a balanced, and reasonably challenging way, after which a teacher can adjust their curriculum accordingly. Finally, a teacher can give tests that may either by scheduled by the school or according to one's own syllabus. Diagnostic tests can be given at the beginning of a course to assess the level or the students; progress tests can be given throughout to test whether or not students are absorbing new materials; and achievement tests (i.e. final exams) are usually given at the end of a course. Placement tests are used before one has started a course to put students into the appropriate level for their language skills. I prefer progress testing to formal testing, although I know the latter is often expected and required. As a language-learner myself I've found progress tests much more useful in my absorption of knowledge and success in learning. Formal exams tend to be too long and weighty, and not reflective of the slow, gradual accumulation of language acquisition. Shorter, but more frequent tests, can function as a check-in for both teachers and students alike. The unit also covers external examinations for English, including TOEFL, TOEIC, and a number of exams under the Cambridge Assessment. As a teacher you may also want to prepare students for these external examinations with practice tests.
