This unit covers the various class types an EFL teacher may encounter, including (but not limited to) beginners, individuals, young learners, and business (or ESP). Each have their unique approaches and challenges. Beginner students can be tricky, as their are many categories, and so require a more patient and self-aware approach than usual. Individual students lose the variety of classroom interaction, but a teacher can hyper-focus a lesson. Children are challenging as they often lack the same motivations as adult students and are usually motivated by exterior pressures That said, and I highly agree with this, young learners are amazingly rewarding to teach and mentor. Children arguably have the most issues and circumstances to be aware of. However, I find it vexing that the lesson has to remind potential teachers not to threaten physical violence on children. Business English, or ESP, has its own methods, as students are more clients/customers in practice. The lesson offers a sample of a Needs Analysis in order to gauge future class content and student needs. Finally, the differences between monolingual and multilingual classes are highlighted.
The lesson was most useful for me in understanding Business English, as that is the field I have the least interaction with. The use of a Needs Analysis sounds obvious after-the-fact.
