This unit discussed the importance of classroom management. I learned that there are various ways to manage a classroom successfully, most of which is dependent upon class size, age group, and English language level. I learned the teacher must be able to inspire confidence in his/her students to promote a great learning environment. A teacher can use eye contact, gestures and his/her voice to manage a class a maintain discipline. Grouping students is another way to manage a class. Students can be taught as a class, placed into smaller groups or in pairs, or work individually. There are advantages and disadvantages to using groups. Some advantages include increased talking time for students, more interaction between students, and peer work. Some disadvantages are noise levels can increase, and it may be more difficult for a teacher to monitor the class or maintain discipline if he/she is working with a group or individual. Another way to manage a classroom is by seating arrangement. The teacher should decide on an arrangement based on class size and activity. The teacher should also consider what type of environment is more conducive to the lesson being taught. Other ways to manage a class is by establish rapport with students, maintaining discipline by preventing problem behaviors as much as possible, and responding appropriately when necessary, balancing TTT and STT, and knowing when it is appropriate to stand or sit down when teaching.
