This unit covered the advantages and disadvantages of course books, as well as the pros and cons, as well as usage, of authentic and creative materials. It also covered example created materials that teachers may use to supplement their activities in class. The most helpful thing I learned from this unit was the advantages and disadvantages of course books – I learned that while they provide a great guideline for the curriculum, they should always be adapted to student needs since most textbooks are made and published for general audiences. I also learned the specific usages of authentic materials, and when they would be helpful to use in class and the considerations teachers need to make before using them (e.g., considering and carefully selecting level-appropriate material).
