I think, out of all the chapters so far, the idea of direct speech is the most confusing for me. I can now, at least partially, understand why students find this idea challenging. Changing just one or two words to make the sentence natural but also still report the correct meaning is challenging. Likewise, the fact that simple words like 'today,' 'tomorrow,' and 'yesterday' change so drastically can also be a concern. I think by teaching students the proper grammar points to change verbs first (unit 06 and 08 respectably) will aid students' understanding of these points. Likewise, I think teaching the structure of If/when separately might also help. For example, instead of teaching "If you don't do x, then y won't happen" might be too hard. Structuring would definitely help, I believe. Ask questions: "If you don't do X, what happens?" and have students respond with "Y happens."
